Flood Relief

A message from Somerset Community Foundation:

Guidelines for applicants to 2012 Flood Appeal – 28th Nov 2012

Somerset County Council has provided £50,000 for immediate relief to flood victims to be administered by Somerset Community Foundation (charity no 1094446) under our Surviving Winter programme. We are already receiving additional donations to build this fund from the public and we are also beginning to collect other offer of help such as accommodation and furniture.

Emergency Relief Grants

Our first priority is to swiftly get financial help to people whose homes have been flooded during November 2012.

We call these ‘Emergency Relief Grants’ and they will take the form of a flat-rate payment of £250 to help with the most immediate needs. A simple application form is attached to these guidelines. For more information please contact Somerset Community Foundation on 01749 344949 for more information.

Dunnock’s Lane

Somerset County Council has completed work on Dunnock’s Lane and a further phase will be undertaken in the future (possibly after Christmas) when part of the Yeovil Road will be closed.  It is hoped that improvement to the drainage capabilities within Yeovil Road would be achieved when the final work is completed.

East Coker Walking Maps

Sarah Owen brought the recently compiled and tested set of Walking Maps to ECPC.  Their production has taken a lot of time and energy from volunteers, and the result is an impressive pack that will encourage people to enjoy the walks and the significance of local heritage.  ECPC has agreed to sponsor the production of the maps, which will be sold at local outlets.

Bid for Funding for Health and Wellbeing

Somerset County Council Health and Wellbeing Board have made funds available for distribution via County Councillors.  County Councillor Cathy Bakewell has £10,000 to support projects with a minimum bid of £500.  Examples of relevant activities could include starting lunch clubs for the elderly, equipment for pre-schools, supporting intergenerational work with the community, activities to increase people’s general health and fitness etc.  If you think you may be eligible to apply, please contact Councillor Kath Wilson in the first instance on 475029 or kath.wilson@sky.com.  Applications needed before January 2013.

Reinstatement of Mobile Library Service

During August a mobile library service will be operating again in your area. The updated routes will be available on the Somerset County Council website at www.somerset.gov.uk/mobilelibrary.  Route plans will also be available at every Somerset Library as well as from the mobile libraries themselves.

Mobile library visits will be monthly. If you have a Somerset library card you can start to use the mobile straightaway.  Otherwise a library card can be issued to you at the time of your visit – simply bring along some form of identification, such as a driving licence or utility bill that displays your current name and address.  As at all Somerset libraries, customers can borrow up to 20 items at any one time.

The four mobile libraries re-entering service are based at Bridgwater, Taunton, Williton and Wells.  This is in addition to the two mobiles that are already providing a service – the routes for these two vehicles will continue unchanged.  East Coker will receive a visit from a mobile library operating from Wells that will call on Thursdays

All enquiries about the mobile library service can be answered by contacting a library advisor on 0845 3459177.

The newly-appointed mobile library drivers/assistants will be very pleased to see you and we all hope that the reinstated service will be well supported.

Please see the calendar for details of the stop dates, times and locations.

David Laws – East Coker Surgery

David Laws MP will be holding an East Coker Surgery in the Village Hall, Halves Lane, East Coker on Tuesday 24th July at 3.30pm.  This is an opportunity for you to speak to Mr Laws directly on any concerns you have.  It is expected that Mr Laws’ time will be limited, so meetings will be on a first come first served basis.

Somerset Routes

Where in the world could you find a Bakelite coffin, the oldest manmade road in Britain, the largest collection of Naval aircraft in Europe or early Victorian prosthetic limbs?

You might be surprised to find out the answer is Somerset!

For a county with a history as rich and diverse as its countryside, Somerset boasts an amazing number of museums and heritage attractions.  Somerset Routes is a unique map and guide which highlights over 100 of the counties best heritage sites to visit.

Taking the form of a ‘tube map’, the county has been broken down into seven different lines to travel on, spread across the country and taking in the best sights and things to do.  Each line takes you to the museums, historic railways, castles, gardens, stately homes and archaeological sites that make Somerset’s heritage unique.

Along with the map, a free booklet has been created which for the first times gives information and contact details about all the major heritage sites in the county.  The booklet details each suggested stop and includes a website link where possible and there’s a useful tip or nugget of information with every entry.

The touring map, guidebook and itineraries are available to download for free at www.visitsomerset.co.uk/touring-map.  Taster videos are available at www.youtube.com/somersetmuseums

New Dog Waste Bin

The Parish Council have been investigating the potential provision of a dog-waste bin at the end of Burton Lane.  When the logistics of emptying the container and suitable positioning have been overcome, it is hoped to add this extra facility.

Successful Litter Pick

Councillor Bridget Sugg organised a Litter Pick on Saturday 10 March and after her splendid bacon rolls, a trusty group set off to clean up the roads and lanes around the Parish.  Many thanks to all those who gave up their Saturday morning to make our parish look even lovelier.  Anything we can do to encourage people not to drop litter is most important.  From an early age we learn either to hurl refuse anywhere or dispose of it responsibly.  However if we all pick up litter when we see it, the beauty of our Parish will be maintained.
